Origins of an icon
The Land Cruiser story began with the Toyota BJ prototype. It made history in 1951 when it climbed to a remote checkpoint high on Mount Fuji – higher than any land-based vehicle had previously managed. In 1954 the BJ was renamed Land Cruiser, and a legend was born.
  1. 1955: Land Cruiser 20

    Retaining the original’s utility, the 20 added upgraded suspension and a range of body styles. A key export model, the Land Cruiser 20 helped establish Toyota’s global reputation for toughness.

  2. 1960: Land Cruiser 40

    With its rugged styling, white roof, wraparound rear windows and short overhangs, the distinctive 40 series was also the first Land Cruiser equipped with a two-speed transfer case, further improving off-road performance.

  3. 1984: Land Cruiser 70

    The 40 series was 25 years old when Toyota introduced the 70. More refined and luxurious than its predecessor, it retained the off-road capability and durability by now synonymous with the Land Cruiser name.

  4. 1996: Land Cruiser 90

    With independent front suspension for improved on-road dynamics, the versatile 90 updated the Land Cruiser concept with new technology and improved performance from a range of petrol and diesel engines.

  5. 2002: Land Cruiser 120

    The product of an intensive development programme that began in 1997, the 120 re-introduced distinctive Land Cruiser design. The styling concept was developed by ED2, Toyota’s advanced design centre in Europe.

  6. 2009: Land Cruiser 150

    Arriving in 2009, the 150 series combined outstanding durability with the unrivalled off-road performance fundamental to the Land Cruiser legend. Popular across the world, Land Cruiser continues to take people anywhere they need – or want – to go.
